Develop a 5–7-page paper on the selected topic supporting ideas with current research from the scholarly literature that fully explores the topic. The paper will provide the basis for you to explain the impact of the issue facing the child in the scenario you selected from the Scenarios media piece. The paper should have APA structure, formatting, and referencing.

Assignment Context

From the perspective of a professional who has knowledge and expertise in child development, you have been invited to address an audience that includes parents as well as other professionals on a specific issue. Select one topic under early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescence as the focus of your paper and written presentation. Your textbook introduces various issues linked to biology and the environment, health, education, and cultural influences. Start exploring the material in the text that is relevant to your selected issue and then expand your research to include current secondary literature.

Your assignment is divided into two parts:

Part 1

Develop a 5–7-page paper on the selected topic supporting ideas with current research from the scholarly literature that fully explores the topic. The paper will provide the basis for you to explain the impact of the issue facing the child in the scenario you selected from the Scenarios media piece. The paper should have APA structure, formatting, and referencing.

Part 2

Prepare a 2-page presentation for the intended audience based on the research you conducted on the topic. Write out the presentation on two double-spaced pages. This does not need APA in-text referencing, but you can refer to important scholarly sources that support your ideas. Remember to consider the level of understanding the audience may have on the topic so that you avoid jargon or provide clarification. This presentation needs to have objective support, but, as a presentation, it can be in more informal first-person language.

Assignment Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Use the accepted form and style of the psychological professions, employing grammar, punctuation, and mechanics expected of graduate-level composition and expression.
  • References: Include a minimum of six academic, peer-reviewed resources. The course text can be used, but it is not considered one of the peer-reviewed articles.
  • APA style and formatting: Format the references and in-text citations according to current APA style and formatting guidelines. Use the MEAL Plan document (given in the resources) to organize the content and include APA headings and subheadings.
  • Length of paper: 5–7 typed, double-spaced pages.

Complete a 3-4 page reflection (not counting title or reference pages) in which you analyze the results of your sleep/dream journal. Consider how your psychological and physical health interacted. What patterns did you see?

Sleep Journal and Reflection Project

The meaning, origin, and analysis of dreams have fascinated psychologists since the inception of the field of psychology. Sigmund Freud, often referred to as the father of psychology, focused a great deal of his theoretical energy on trying to understand and interpret dreams.

Contemporary psychologists are beginning to recognize the interconnectivity of human physiology and psychology in a way not previously understood. This is in part because of new interest in holistic health and in part because of brain/body connections we are now able to see and understand for the first time due to enhanced technology. Yoga, mindfulness, healthy eating, meditation, holistic health – all of these practices are gaining more traction in mainstream society and among psychological circles as we recognize how the mind and body work together. In light of this growing area of interest in psychology, for this assignment you will maintain a sleep/dream journal during weeks 3 and 4, and complete an analysis and reflection on your experience in a summary reflection paper in week 5.

Specifically, for this assignment you will:

  • Keep a sleep/dream journal for at least 10 days throughout Weeks 3 and 4. In your journal make note of:
    • any dreams you had
    • any initial thoughts about the dream – events of the day that may relate, etc.
    • your general sleep schedule (if you have a tracker such as fitbit, include data on your sleep patterns as well – wakefulness, restlessness, times asleep/awake per night, total sleep, etc.)
    • your general eating habits by day
    • your general exercise habits by day
    • anything else of note in your psychological or physical health (stress, excitement, changes, etc.)
  • You may use any format you wish to record the data (notepad, computer, hardcopy spreadsheet, etc.).
  • Complete a 3-4 page reflection (not counting title or reference pages) in which you analyze the results of your sleep/dream journal. Consider how your psychological and physical health interacted. What patterns did you see? Discuss the impact that various factors such as fatigue, diet, stress and exercise had on your dreams and sleep patterns. Explain how this insight may impact your behaviors in the future to lead to better psychological and physical health.
  • Utilize at least 2 academic resources (your course readings can comprise one of the sources) to support your analysis and discussion.

Assignment Deadline: 11:55pm Eastern Time Sunday at the end of Week 5 of the course term. Submission should include:

  • Title page in APA format

Effects that depend on literal or figurative language (e.g., jokes that come from a character’s taking things literally; misunderstandings that arise from the use of figurative language)

Assignment:

You can learn much about the language and thought processes of young children by examining the literature written for them.

For this assignment, you are asked to visit the children’s section of your local library or bookstore. Ask the librarian or salesperson to guide you to 3 books that are “classic” or well-loved storybook for children from 3 to 5 years old. Examine the books carefully. If possible, read them aloud to a child or someone else. Then complete the following items.

  1. Within each book, look for at least two examples of story elements, which relate to patterns of the thought process and cognitive development within early childhood. Examples could include:
    • Egocentrism (e.g., animals that dress and talk like a child; misunderstandings that arise from the main character’s self-centered viewpoint)
    • Centration (e.g., stories about characters who have only one prominent feature; stories about a child’s focusing on one special goal, trait, or object)
    • Effects that depend on literal or figurative language (e.g., jokes that come from a character’s taking things literally; misunderstandings that arise from the use of figurative language)
    • Story elements that reassure the child about the strong ties of family and friendship
    • Story elements that reflect the young child’s fear of separation

What possible courses of action (considering an ethical decision-making model) are there and what are the consequences? •How would you address this issue in your counseling sessions? •What potential countertransference issues are evident and need to be addressed by the counselor with a supervisor or colleague?

Keeping the ACA 2014 Code of Ethics in mind, read through the ethics vignette located below. Respond to the questions at the end of the vignette and post any additional ethical implications related to the vignette that you identify for your instructor and fellow learners to review.   Linda is a 42-year-old licensed mental health counselor, who has been seeing Julie as a client for six months. Julie, 38 years old, came to counseling feeling depressed. She works hard to raise two children by herself, feels overwhelmed much of the time, and has low self-esteem. She is very sensitive to rejection, and has ended several friendships when she believed the other person was critical or not accepting of her.  Over the course of their counseling relationship, Julie has developed very warm feelings for her therapist, and has sometimes wished that they had met under different circumstances so they could have been friends. Linda and Julie have a lot in common and Linda responds to Julie to reinforce this commonality. They are close in age, were raised in the same religion, have similar values, and enjoy the same activities. Coincidentally, both of their children are in the high school band together within a rural community. Julie has seen Linda at some of the band rehearsals, and they have chatted briefly by their cars afterward while waiting for their children.  In the past few sessions, Julie has talked about something “missing” in her life and has expressed a desire to reconnect with a church community. She has heard from her children that Linda’s family attends a church of the same denomination she was raised in—the only one in their small town—and tells Linda that she would also like to go to services there. She asks if Linda would introduce her to some of the members of the congregation, and help her to get acquainted with church activities or committees she might become involved in. She states, “It would be so good to see you on Sundays, too!”  Linda knows how difficult it has been for Julie to connect with other people and believes this type of community would be very supportive for her. However, Linda is a very active member in this church. She and her husband serve on several of the major committees with some of their closest friends. A good deal of her family’s social life centers around church functions and meetings, many of which regularly take place in Linda’s home.  Discussion Questions •What potential legal or ethical issues are involved and who will be impacted by them? •What possible courses of action (considering an ethical decision-making model) are there and what are the consequences? •How would you address this issue in your counseling sessions? •What potential countertransference issues are evident and need to be addressed by the counselor with a supervisor or colleague?
